3 Signs A Cockapoo Is Right For Your Home And Family
From grooming and training to feeding and providing them with proper healthcare, it is easy to see the challenges of a new puppy. Deciding to get a puppy is not your only decision to make because you also need to decide which breed is right for your needs. The cockapoo is the offspring of a poodle and cocker spaniel, so it will have a combination of traits from both of these breeds. While some consider it a mutt, the cockapoo is actually a hybrid breed that offers many unique characteristics. If you are considering adding a puppy to your home and family's life, here are a few signs that a cockapoo may be the right breed.
Family Member Has Allergies
An estimated 15 percent of the population is allergic to dogs and cats. If one or more of your family members suffers from this type of allergy, you may think having a pet is impossible. Fortunately, that is not true, since cockapoos are hypoallergenic dogs.
Cockapoos have a thick, somewhat curly coat, meaning the breed does not shed as much as dogs with short, fine hairs. This decreased shedding ensures there is less pet dander in your home, which is beneficial to your family member's allergies.
Since they do have hair, cockapoos are not completely hypoallergenic, though. Consider having the family member with allergies visit with the puppy a few times before bringing them into the home.
To reduce the risk of dander and allergy symptoms once your puppy moves into the home, make sure to bathe and brush the dog regularly.
You Have Energy, Sometimes
If you and the rest of your family have a good amount of energy, a cockapoo puppy may be the right dog for you.
The level of this breed's energy varies throughout the day. Some puppies will be incredibly energetic, wanting to play, run, and jump throughout the day, but then prefer to spend the rest of their time resting and cuddling up with you on the couch for long hours.
For the best relationship, make sure to exercise your puppy regularly and give them a good amount of cuddle time, too.
You Have Children and Other Pets
Because the breed is so social, the cockapoo is a great dog if you have young children and/or other pets in the home.
Cockapoos will enjoy playing with and loving on your young children, but they will also enjoy spending time with your other dogs or cats in the home.
If you tend to have guests in your home frequently, the breed is ideal. Cockapoos love meeting new people.
